Protecting Yourself From Zika

There is currently no vaccine against Zika, though researchers are making progress.

The best way to protect yourself from Zika virus at this time is to limit your exposure to the virus.

  • Protect yourself and your loved ones from mosquito bites.
  • Reduce mosquito populations around your home by eliminating sources of standing water. (You can use commercially available larvicides (.pdf) to treat standing water that cannot be drained.
  • Keep mosquitos out of your home by using window screens and using the air conditioning whenever possible. Do not leave doors propped open.
  • Check for places indoors where mosquitos may populate, including humid, dark places (like bathrooms, the space under sinks and laundry rooms), as well as places inside the home that may have standing water, such as flower vases or vessels used to catch overflow water from potted plants.
  • Reduce mosquito access to exposed skin while outdoors by wearing long sleeves and pants. Try to remain indoors if possible, especially during the early morning and evening when mosquitos are most active.
  • Use condoms during sex or abstain from sex altogether, especially if you or your partner have traveled to areas where Zika virus is active or have been symptomatic of the virus. It is possible for someone to sexually transmit Zika before their symptoms begin, while they are symptomatic or after they no longer have symptoms.
  • Avoid travel to places where Zika transmission is active, including certain areas of Florida.
